Information
Angkor Wat: Cambodia’s iconic landmark
Angkor Wat is a temple in Cambodia. The term “Angkor” means “capital of the kingdom,” and “Wat” means “temple,” so the name refers to a temple in the capital. Built mostly from stone, Angkor Wat is so vast that it holds the title of the largest temple in the world. In addition to its impressive size, the carvings stand out for their uniqueness and beauty, earning them the affection of many tourists.
When Angkor Wat was constructed in the early 12th century, the Khmer people inhabited the region. The Khmer people believed that upon the death of a king or royal family member, they would join with the god they had worshiped. To honor this belief, they created temples dedicated to those deities. Angkor Wat was constructed by King Suryavarman II, who ruled at the height of the Khmer Empire, as a temple to the god he hoped to join with after his passing.
