St. Basil’s Cathedral is an Eastern Orthodox church located south of Red Square in Moscow, Russia. Unlike many European cathedrals, it is known for its colorful design and distinctive domes, giving it the look of a fairy-tale palace. Inside, the cathedral features beautiful murals on the walls and ceilings. In front of the cathedral, there are statues dedicated to two heroes who helped liberate Moscow from the Polish forces in the 17th century.
The cathedral was built to commemorate Russia’s victory over the Mongol army. It was named after the famous saint Basil. Despite its eye-catching design, which may make people think it was built recently, the cathedral was actually started in 1555 and completed in five years. It has been standing for over 460 years.
