The Sultan Ahmed Mosque: Turkiye’s iconic landmark
The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, located in Istanbul, is one of Turkiye’s most famous landmarks and an iconic symbol of Islam. Originally called the “Sultan Ahmed Mosque,” it is commonly referred to as the “Blue Mosque” due to the blue and green tiles that adorn its interior. The mosque features an elegant architectural design with a round dome and six slender minarets, creating a magnificent silhouette. It is not only a place for prayer but also a top tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the world.
Istanbul, once known as Byzantium and Constantinople, spans both Europe and Asia and was part of the Ottoman Empire. Sultan Ahmed I began the mosque’s construction in 1609, and it was completed in 1616. A distinctive feature of the Blue Mosque is its location directly opposite the Hagia Sophia, Turkiye’s most famous cathedral.
