Information
Thales and the Pyramid
Thales of Miletus was a wise man from ancient Greece who lived around 2,600 years ago. He is often called the “Father of Geometry” because he used math to solve real-world problems. One famous story tells how he measured the height of the Great Pyramid in Egypt.
Thales and the Pyramid
Thales visited Egypt and wanted to know how tall the Great Pyramid was. Instead of climbing it, he used a clever method involving shadows. He waited until his own shadow was as long as his height. At that exact time, he measured the shadow of the pyramid. Since his shadow and height were equal, he knew that the pyramid’s shadow length was equal to its height. This way, he could determine the pyramid’s height without measuring it directly.
This method is an early example of using geometry to solve problems. Thales’ approach showed that by understanding shapes and their properties, we can find solutions to challenges in the world around us.
Thales’ work laid the foundation for many mathematical principles we use today. His innovative thinking demonstrated the power of observation and reasoning in understanding the world.
