Information

Thales and the Pyramid

Thales of Miletus was a wise man from ancient Greece who lived around 2,600 years ago. He is often called the “Father of Geometry” because he used math to solve real-world problems. One famous story tells how he measured the height of the Great Pyramid in Egypt. Thales and the Pyramid Thales visited Egypt and wanted to know how tall the Great Pyramid was. Instead of climbing it, he used a clever method involving shadows. He waited until his own shadow was as long as his height. At that exact time, he measured the shadow of the pyramid. Since his shadow and height were equal, he knew that the pyramid’s shadow length was equal to its height. This way, he could determine the pyramid’s height without measuring it directly. This method is an early example of using geometry to solve problems. Thales’ approach showed that by understanding shapes and their properties, we can find solutions to challenges in the world around us. Thales’ work laid the foundation for many mathematical principles we use today. His innovative thinking demonstrated the power of observation and reasoning in understanding the world.

I am Thales. I was born about 2,600 years ago in Miletus, which is in today’s Turkey. My hometown was a seaside village. Let me tell you a funny story from when I used to sell salt.

One day, I got an order for salt from a village across the river. I was so excited that I loaded up my camel with tons of salt and headed out. But when we tried to cross the river, the salt was so heavy that my camel slipped and fell into the water. All the salt dissolved, and I had to return home with nothing. After that day, my clever camel seemed to learn a trick. Every time we crossed the river with salt, it would fall on purpose to make the load lighter! I had to find a way to teach it a lesson. So I had a clever idea. This time, I loaded the camel with cotton instead of salt! When the camel fell into the water, the cotton soaked up so much water that it became much heavier. After that, the camel never fell again. Ha-ha!

Later, I traveled to Egypt and other places to study math and learn about the world. And during my travels, I came to an important realization: Everything in this world is made from water.’

Oh, I almost forgot why I’m here. I came to show you how to measure the height of abuilding! Enough about my stories, let’s get to the fun part!
