The Acropolis: Greece’s iconic landmark
The Acropolis is a famous cultural heritage site in Greece. The word “Acropolis” is derived from the Greek words “Akros” (meaning “high”) and “Polis” (meaning “city”), reflecting the fact that it was built on a high hill. It was constructed as a fortress to defend the city from invaders and to house temples dedicated to the gods, all built from stone. Greece has several acropolises, but the Acropolis in Athens, especially with the Parthenon, is the most renowned.
Construction of the Acropolis began about 2,500 years ago, during a time when Greece consisted of many small city-states. After Athens defeated Persia in battle, they began constructing larger temples. However, before the work was finished, the Persians attacked and destroyed many buildings. In response, the Athenians rebuilt with stronger walls, and the Acropolis was eventually completed over several generations.
