Information

The Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is a famous skyscraper in New York City, located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 34th Street. It was completed in 1931 and held the title of the world’s tallest building for about 40 years.

Design and Structure

This building has 102 floors and stands 1,250 feet (381 meters) tall to its roof. Including its antenna spire, it reaches 1,454 feet (443.2 meters).

The Empire State Building was the first building to have more than 100 floors. It has 6,500 windows and 73 elevators, and there are 1,860 steps from street level to the 102nd floor.

Construction

Construction of the Empire State Building began in 1930 and was completed in 1931, taking just 410 days.

This was a remarkable achievement, especially considering it was built during the Great Depression, a time when the economy was struggling.

Observation Decks

The building has observation decks on the 86th and 102nd floors, offering visitors stunning views of New York City. More than 3.5 million people visit these observation decks every year.

Cultural Significance

The Empire State Building is an iconic symbol of New York City and has been featured in many movies, such as “King Kong” and “Sleepless in Seattle.” It was designated a New York City Landmark in 1981.

Fun Facts

  • The building has its own ZIP code: 10118.

  • It has 2.7 million square feet of office space and houses around 1,000 businesses.

  • The Empire State Building Run-Up is an annual race where participants run from the ground floor to the 86th floor, covering 1,576 steps.

Today, the Empire State Building remains one of the most recognizable structures in the world and a testament to early 20th-century engineering and architecture.
