The Great Wall of China: China’s iconic landmark

The Great Wall of China is a huge and long wall located in northern China. It was constructed to defend against invasions from other groups. Given its immense importance in Chinese history, the Great Wall was built over a long period, through various dynasties. It was continually repaired and expanded, eventually reaching a length of thousands of kilometers.

At first, the Great Wall was not one continuous wall. During the time when China was divided into different states and engaged in wars, each state built its own walls for defense. Later, when Qin Shi Huang unified China, he connected these walls and created the Great Wall around 214 BCE. However, the Great Wall created during this period was different from the one we know today. Over the years, later rulers of China continued to repair and expand it, eventually making it into the Great Wall we recognize.
